NETIL MARKET...

There is a new market is in town! Netil Market, OK it’s not new but it is now opening on Sundays. Nestled in a car park just off Mare Street, Netil Market was named by Time Out as “one of London’s best new markets” and recently received love from Conde Nast Traveller. The Sunday market will focus on focus on art, food and furniture with Spit & Roast serving up chicken, Love & Cake serving up dessert and Flour Station serving up bread to start – you could have a whole three course meal!

City Curries and pan-Asian pit stop Hardcore Prawn will also be in attendance with art and interiors stalls on rotation, live performances and music. Sunday, Fundays baby!

THE BIG LUNCH...

The Diamond Jubilee is fast approaching and as you have seen there are a few things going on over the weekend. But who throws the best party, who goes all out to impress the neighbours, bakes homemade food, stocks up the booze, entertains the kids, well that's you my dear...

Why not throw your own party and take part in this year's Big Lunch. It's not too late to order your pack full of Jubilee goodies for the occasion and be part of the millions of people around the country who will be coming together with friends, family and their local community to promote friendships, skills, share stories and more importantly, make friends. For a friendly community is a healthy and happier community.

This year Carling are the official beer sponsor and if you are having an event in your neighbourhood you might have got your delivery of free lager! Over 10 million people came out in sunny 1977, surely you can raise a glass to that, weather permitting of course - but if their is one thing us Brits can do, it's have a bloody good time come wind, rain or shine.

Order your Big Lunch pack here.

BEATEN AND CREAMED...

It was only a matter of time before the pub quiz broke out of the confines of the boozer and started to appear in other locations. And given that baking is the new rock 'n' roll, it is no surprise to see that trendy cake shop Cakey Muto will be hosting the Beaten and Creamed quiz on Thursday 7th June.

A unique one-off event, the quiz is to help celebrate the launch Beaten and Creamed magazine, a brand spanking new publication all about the cult of the cupcake from the twisted mind of Miss Cakehead. This deviant baker has a somewhat 'alternative' take on cakes, you won't find her creating sweet innocent treats, her cakes are X-rated and not for children or those of a sensitive disposition. In fact a post we wrote on her creations is one of our highest hitting posts ever.

Iced to look like butchered meat or assorted body parts, her creations are most definitely cakes for grown ups. Kicking off at 8pm, we'd recommend getting their early as its fist come, first served! Entry is £2 each with teams of up to four people. Miss Cakehead was part of the team that produced some incredible cakes for the Kerrang! awards party (including an edible ashtray!) and alongside the Golden Afternoon Tea Company, will be producing treats for each table, so expect something a little bit special. Get on down here and test your taste buds as well as showing off your general knowledge!

WHISKEY AND WORDS...

There is a new scene in town folks and it’s called ‘Whiskey & Words’. Put together by Jameson,Whiskey & Words offers a unique setting for book and film lovers. The series of events will showcase some of the hottest authors in intimate settings where they will read a passage from their own book followed by a Q&A. Oh and there will be drinks too ;)

Combining cult film and cult literature we think Jameson, are on to something here, and it is a great opportunity to fire a few questions on some pretty epic books.

The first one is with cult author James Sallis who wrote Drive and will be talking about the sequel, Driven – no word on whether Mr Gosling will star yet but perhaps that could be our question! The first one takes place Monday 28th May at the Brick Lane Bookshop and the series runs for three months with a different author each time.

The evening will be hosted by singer, poet and The Book Club Boutique’s producer, Soho's hippest literary salon – Salena Goddens. DJ’s will be spinning music and you are invited to pop along for the evening and enjoy some Jameson Irish Whiskey cocktails.

The ‘Whiskey & Words’ sessions will be open to public with seats attributed on a first come, first served basis by emailing whiskeyandwords@gmail.com. If you fancy heading along then drop them a line soon as places are limited!

THE PLEASURE GARDENS...

The London Pleasure Gardens have announced that they will be opening on 30th June 2012 with a two day celebration. The Pleasure Gardens are London's very own labour of love from the team behind Glastonbury's Shangri-La, and if you've ever been in Shangri-La you're gonna want in here.

The gardens will be located in the Olympic East End at the Royal Victoria Dock and will remain open for 3 years. The 20 acre site will host open-air concerts, dance and theatre arenas, historic and contemporary architecture, an urban nature reserve, a boutique hotel and a floating cocktail bar with a 24 hour license. If the artists impression above is anything to go by it looks like this place is going to be ACE.

There may not be a Glastonbury this year but at least we have the Pleasure Gardens!

BAILEY'S EAST END...

Two of our favourite things combine this Summer and it has nada to do with the Olympics or the Jubilee. We're talking about Legendary photographer David Bailey's latest exhibition which is all about the East End he grew up in. The exhibition takes place at The Royal Docks in Newham and will feature images spanning over fifty years split in three chunks centered around his homeland through the 60's, 80's and from the past five years. The collection is made up of large scale prints of the people who surrounded him when growing up, the places he frequented and what was hip and happening back then including a shoot of The Krays, amongst other characters and 'faces' of the time.

It will no doubt be interesting to see the changes in the landscape and culture. Bailey's East End opens 6th July and runs until 5th August, so if you are looking for something to do in London this Summer which isn't sport related then this is well worth a look.

Entry is £6 unless you are a resident of Newham, in which case it will be free. Lovely

CARNABY BOOK EXCHANGE...

How often do you read, us we would say less and less these days, although not for the lack of wanting. Busy lifestyles, not taking a dinner at work, always on the bike rather than the tube which means settling down with a good book is for aeroplanes and holidays. If you are a book worm or fancy off loading your shelves or picking up something new then the Carnaby Book Exchange is for you. Set up by students of the London College of Fashion you can find allsorts from old school classics to the latest and greatest.

Hailed as possibly London’s most diverse book club this incentive is aimed for people to share their memories as well as books so you may find a 'little note' on the inside cover with some sentimental paragraph explaining new life inspiring tails or simply that they'd never read it and don't understand what it’s about. Becoming a Book Worm has never been so appealing...

THE CHAP OLYMPIAD 2012

What would you say is the most upper class event in the sporting calendar? The Boat Race? Royal Ascot? The Henley Regatta? No, it is of course the Chap Olympiad! Now in it's seventh year, the Chap Olympiad does not celebrate the athletic excellence that will be visited upon Stratford this summer, and instead rewards immaculate trouser creases and the size of the curl in one's handlebar moustache.

Organised by those delightful fellows at The Chap magazine, the event is described as 'anarcho-dandyism', taking the ostentatious peacocking of dandyism and adding a splash of devil-may-care anarchy. It's all about dressing up in your elegant finery, formal wear or dandywear but adding a touch of the ridiculous by competing against each other in various gentlemanly disciplines.

For the first time, popular demand now requires that the Olympiad runs over two days. Comedy fans may recall Monty Python's 'Upper Class Twit of the Year' which has clearly inspired some of the events here. At the Olympiad, you may wish to try your hand at cucumber sandwich discus, ironing board surfing or the steeplechase, where chaps wear horse masks and are jockeyed by chappettes over treacherous six-inch high obstacles. If you prefer your sport a little more vocal then you may wish to have a go at Butler Baiting, or the ever popular Shouting at Foreigners.

If team sports are more your thing, then have a go at the Martini knockout relay, where teams of four have to prepare the perfect dry martini over a ten yard course. If you fancy yourself as a debonair, distinguished dapper gent, then dig out your pipe, monocle and Brylcreem then this is the event for you. Cocktails will be supplied by Bourne and Hollingsworth, with food, including a classic afternoon tea, served all day.

Tickets cost £20 for one day, or £30 for both days, a small price to pay to display your gentlemanly calibre. The quintessential event for tweed clad British eccentrics and charming chappettes everywhere!

Bedford Square, WC1

N16 JUBILEE PARTY

Roll up, Roll up the Jubilee is nearly upon us and to be brutally honest we've already seen the good, the bad and the damn right ugly when it comes to people jumping on the "Best of British" Band Wagon! The one thing we are loving is the amount of celebrations and parties kicking off. The N16 Jubilee party looks right up our street and it actually is as our HQ is based there.

The party will be taking place on Church Street and you can find British Food, Market Stalls, Live Music, Entertainment and Games. It's completely free so don your best frock and head along for a fun filled afternoon because one thing is for sure those N16'rs know how to party!

SUGARHOUSE STUDIOS...

Set amongst the rubble near the Olympic Park site lays an abandoned sign-writers workshop. The workshop is awaiting demolishment and in the meantime Sugarhouse Studios have sprung this into action by turning it into a home for late night movies, a Sunday cinema, supper club, events space with workshops for small scale making and design along with a cafe (with proper builders tea for 80p) and a bar, open seven days a week.

Kicking off this weekend is American Graffiti a nostalgic technicolour cruise through teenage rock and roll culture of the early 1960's with a deep dark undercurrent, Saturday sees a Mario Cart Tournament (nice) and Sunday a Lebanese Supper Club.

On Thursday (10th May) you can catch film Radio On (1979) with a Q&A with director Chris Petit. Radio On is a rare example of a British road movie, shot in black and white and featuring music from a number of New Wave bands.

KETEL ONE 80 BAR

There's a new bar in Camden town and we're talking sleek and sophisticated, not dirty indie disco dive. Ketel One Eighty bar opened last week above Asian restaurant Gilgamesh. The bar features full length windows with 180 degrees panoramic views that span not only the depths of Camden but London itself. You may struggle to believe that this was once a dark and dreary storage area in the heart of Camden market.

The bar takes pride of place in the centre of the room and is surrounded by copper stools which took 6 weeks to complete. We attended the opening night and were lucky enough to sample a selection of the cocktails, starting with the From Schiedam with Love made up of Ketel One Citroen vodka, lemon juice, syrup and Elderflower cordial then topped up with Prosecco served in tin kettles which were steaming from the spout! Other cocktails include the Ketel One Spring Punch and the rather lethal Rose Cosmopolitan.

Drinks were served with a selection of canapes from the Gilgamesh kitchen - Mini Chilli Salt Squid, Seabass & Foie Gras Dumpling, Espuma of Potato, Wasabi Crème Fraiche & Caviar and Baby Vegetable Tempura with Citron Yuzu Ponzu. There was also vodka jellies on tap and we have to admit we left a little worse for wear. If you're looking for cocktails with views in Camden Town make sure you check it out.
