ROCK N ROLL PHOTOS...

Rock’n’Roll music lovers will be in for a treat with photographer Derek Ridgers latest exhibition of ‘un/seen’ portraits, bands, documentary and live shots of some of the most famous rock’n’roll icons of all time. From a young Nick Cave to Iggy Pop, Jagger, Richards, Morrissey and more head along to The Society Club to view and purchase signed and framed pics – just take the plastic, you’ll need it! Ridgers has been in the game over 35 years and has pulled together a definitive collect of 30 images for his latest exhibition. Un/Seen is open now and runs through until the end of May.

GENESIS CINEMA...

Genesis cinema in Mile End just underwent a mammoth make over with the launch of Studio 5. A new small cinema space with sofas to seat 40, ottomans to store your coats and put your feet on, cosy blankets and its very own bar selling drinks and posh snacks. We were there to test run one of the first screenings and were suitably impressed. The place looks the business and while we watched the movie we nibbled on Olives, Stuffed Peppers, Pitta Breads and Hummus, chocolate coated brazil nuts and other sweet treats.

The cinema has a brilliant history behind it, it’s one of the oldest cinemas in East London and run by a local family (it’s where his parents used to do their courting). The makeover of Studio 5 is part of an ongoing process focusing on its heritage as an entertainment venue back in 1848. We think these cinemas are the future! Just being able to get a drink brought to your table from the bar makes us happy and we’d rather watch films from comfy sofas over hard seating any day! Plus with the Aubin and Wills cinema so frequently booked up it’s nice to have another boutique cinema in East. Check it out....

GOAT RACE...

Fancy going to the races this weekend? Then head to Spitalfields City farm this Saturday 7th April for the annual Oxford and Cambridge Goat Race. The race between the two goats, one named Oxford the other Cambridge promises to be the sporting event of the year (within the goat community). Tickets cost £5 and 50p for kids – all profits go towards saving money for the farm, so go on, spend a fiver and see two goats run…you couldn’t get a hotter ticket for the Olympics.

POP UP CINEMA...

Another film night, another pop-up cinema – well it is Summer and not that we’re complaining! This one will be located at Maltby Street, which is apparently the new Borough Market. Bea's of Bloomsbury have created a ‘block party’ type space where they will provide the screen and you will provide chairs, picnic blankets, beanbags or whatever you want to bring and veg out on to watch some of the most classic movies of all time.

Tickets are a mere £5 and there’s food available too in the form of American Hotdogs with Chili cheese (oh yes please), Bea’s BBQ Chicken, cakes, brownies and of course popcorn. Things kick off on the 10th April and every Tuesday following, doors open at 6:30pm and the movie begins at 7:20 pm.

RILEY'S BAR AND SOCIAL CLUB...

Lower Clapton seems to be taking off of late with a handful of new bars, restaurants and cafes currently under refurb including The Heart of Clapton - a new pub from the people behind The White Hart on Kingsland Road. Now there’s another one on the horizon, Riley’s Bar and Social Club due to open this Thursday (29th March) on lower Clapton Road.

Formed by a group of friends local to the area, who rented the place in November and sold Christmas trees in order to get collect the funds to pay for a makeover – talk about community spirit! They are looking to serve good quality (and where possible locally sourced) teas, coffee, beers, ales, wines and some snacks and sandwiches in pleasant surroundings. It sounds like this summer we maybe spoilt for choice in the amount of little hangouts that are available. Get down, check it out and let us know what you think?

VINSPIRED AWARDS...

On Thursday night LondOntheInside went along to the vInspired Awards 2012 held at the BFI IMAX in Waterloo. The vInspired national awards celebrate young volunteers for the inspirational work they do. Awards range from Best New Volunteer to the Most Outstanding NCS Team. The awards event was hosted by television personality Emma Willis and comedian Eddie Kadi, celebs handing out awards included Trevor Nelson and Tinchy Stryder.

There wasn't a dry eye in the house as the winners were announced and videos were shown of their work. Once the awards had finished the celebrations carried on well into the night with wine and food a plenty. For more information please visit www.vinspired.com

THE HUNTER S

The Hunter S is a Victorian era pub which sits quietly on Southgate Road in the heart of Islington. Upon entering you can’t help but notice the dead animal heads that are dotted around the bar, lounge and dining room - not your usual fox or warthogs, these are beasts. A Black Bear, Water Buffalo, Moose, Peacock and Gazelle are just a few that stick out, the sheer size may mean you could find yourself starting a conversation with them after a few ales.

But enough of this manly talk of beheaded beasts. The pub deco is based on 1930’s styles and another big focal point (after the heads) is the vintage crystal chandelier hanging from the engraved copper ceiling – just beautiful!

The pub grub is pretty hearty too. Main includes tradition Fish and Chips, Burger and Steak. The Scotch egg with homemade piccalilli was a lovely dish, served warm it was large enough to please and small enough to leave you wanting more. Homemade sweet potato chunky fries were a generous portion of thick, tasty wedges and judging from the meals going past our noses the food portions all looked on the large side!

All the usual bevies behind the bar including a lovely pint of Amstel and prosecco served in a Babycham style cocktail glass. On a Tuesday night this place was great, enough people to create a comfortable atmosphere whilst quiet enough to have a good old chit chat. They were playing rhythm and blues the whole time we were in, the only time we’ve ever danced whilst sat eating a Scotch egg. Oh and the toilets are pretty snazzy too.

Hackney Trash Bar has been on our radar for a long time and we’ve been keeping an eye on the creation of this new basement music bar whose motto bends away from the mainstream and into an exciting realm of alternative culture that includes drink prices to reflect the requirements of its clientele.

Sat on Stoke Newington Road the official opening party/club night will take place on Friday 23rd March and is free entry. Open from 1pm until 2am there will be DJ’s playing a huge selection of music including Punk, Ska/Reggae, Hardcore, Metal, 70’s Punk, Garage Punk, psychobilly and rockabilly. XO...

XOYO has proven to be a great venue in the heart of Shoreditch for gig goers and now they are planning to expand by introducing a "cultural hub" on the upper level called XO. This new space will not only be a creative outlet for comedy, film, art and music five nights a week it will also be a place to ‘hangout’ in the café/gallery by day. With i-D Magazine, Moshi Moshi and Transgressive already on board to curate XO's nightlife it seems XOYO will once again be the talking point in East London. The café will be open daily from 7.30am and you can expect some exciting and inspiring exhibitions served alongside great coffee and light bites.

THE FOX

There's yet another new pub on the Dalston scene, we say new we mean refurbished. The latest grotty boozer to get a spanking face lift is The Fox located on Kingsland Road. We went along last night to check out what was in store and we were pleasantly surprised. The pub is now fully kitted out as a gastropub with a decent menu and ales and beers to match.

Although we didn't get to try any of the dishes the burgers and Cornish pasty looked pretty tasty and the prices ain't bad either. We have a feeling this place will be jumping on a weekend although at present the licence is only until 11pm.

POP UP: FLIGHT BA2012

Prepare for take off at the British Airways airline themed pop-up venue – ‘Flight BA2012’, celebrating the best in British talent in the run up to the Olympics. Open on select weekdays from April 4 to 17, the three-in-one art gallery, cinema and dining lounge will showcase the works of Great Britons who were mentored by Richard E Grant, Tracey Emin and Heston Blumenthal.

Prasanna Purwanarajah, Pascal Anson and Simon Hulstone have created Olympic Games themed work, including a short-film, a ‘Dove’ artwork livery for celebratory aircraft and a British food menu.

The airline-themed venue hosted in Shoreditch has been designed to recreate a flight and offers guests a sneak preview of the works before they are rolled out on flights from April.

Bookings can be made from March 19 via the facebook page. Tickets cost £50 and include a glass of champers, 3 course meal, tea and coffe and petit four. Fasten your seat belts...

FILM FUGITIVE...

What's this another Pop up cinema? Sure is! You may have seen our recent posts on film screenings in The Comedy Pub and the Full Stop Bar but now these guerrilla screenings are breaking out of pubs and into the more atmospheric surroundings of churches all over London.

As their name suggests, Film Fugitive is rarely found in the same place twice, popping up at new venues every week to screen cult classics and all time great movies. This March sees the start of the 'Pull Up A Pew' season of five screenings in churches and focuses on three diverse genres; horror, musicals and silent movies, so there is something for everyone.

The event kicks of on Saturday 10th March at St John's in Notting Hill with the classic Christopher Lee Hammer Horror 'Dracula' (sold out), which is guaranteed to be even spookier in the gothic surroundings. The rest of the month will see gothic silent movie 'The Cabinet of Dr Caligari' at St George the Martyr in Borough on Saturday 17th which is sure to appeal to fans of Leo DiCaprio's 'Shutter Island'; retro musical Bugsy Malone on Saturday 24th at All Saint's in Kingston; silent classic 'Steamboat Bill Jnr' again at All Saint's on Saturday 24th and reprising with Bugsy Malone again on Saturday 31st, this time at St Dionis in Parson's Green.

PETER COOK...

One of the funniest men that has graced this Earth would have turned 75 this year. Peter Cook, satirist, writer and comedian was one of the forces behind Beyond the Fringe alongside Jonathan Miller, Alan Bennett and of course Dudley Moore which kick started their career in comedy and help form the entire satire boom in the 60’s. To mark this occasion BFI are screening a series of sketches, skits and satirical shenanigans to showcases some of the works of a genius including The Rise and Rise of Michael Rimmer, Peter Cook: Oddities and Rarities, Peter Cook and Co and Beyond the Fringe and the epic Not Only But Also. BOMPAS & PARR SPACE AGE INSTALLATION...

Those innovative scientists Bompas & Parr who recently launched their explosive wedding service are holding a one day space-age installation this Wednesday 21st March. The one off event sees the pair teaming up with KitchenAid to create a special event looking at the future of food and food preparation.

As well as mind boggling food there will be specially created cocktails courtesy of The Experimental Cocktail Club, and if their past events are anything to go by you can expect a rather spectacular night! All this for only a fiver - we're in.

SEBRIGHT ARMS REAL ALE AND ROCKIN' BLUES FESTIVAL

East London is the heart of the city's microbreweries with no less than three craft brewers in the area and a fourth coming soon. Ale is clearly rising in popularity with a definite demand for designer beers, so it's no surprise to see that the relaunched trendy Hackney boozer the Sebright Arms is catering for ale drinkers by announcing their Real Ale and Rockin' Blues Festival.

Taking place over the weekend of 10th - 11th March, the festival celebrates the community of East London microbreweries with beverages from London Fields, Redchurch and the East London Brewery and a dozen more from further afield. The festival is a great opportunity to sample new beers and get a sneak preview of those that will be launched soon.

Music on the Saturday will be supplied by Gaz Mayall of Gaz's Rockin' Blues spinning old school rock and roll and rhythm and blues. Food will be provided by the Lucky Chip burger van who are currently taking over the kitchen and have been for quite sometime now.

The event runs from midday to midnight on Saturday and midday to 10.30pm on Sunday. Entry is free and beers are just £2.50 each for as long as stocks last - get there early to avoid disappointment and bag a seat before the masses arrive!

THE BRICK LANE POP UP CINEMA

Pop up cinemas are springing up all over town at the moment, soon enough it will be more difficult to find a venue that doesn't host film events than ones that do. The newest addition is the Brick Lane pop up cinema which is hosting a one off event on Wednesday 7th March.

Hosted by the Full Stop Bar, the evening kicks off at 7.30pm with a selection of short films from students before the main event, a showing of 1940's classic Casablanca, starts at 8pm. The bar will be open all night for you to enjoy a few drinks with your popcorn, along with retro sweets and mystery goodie bags.

The best part of all this though is that entry is entirely free (unfortunately the bar is not)! You know how everyone loves a freebie, so make sure you arrive early as space will be limited. Doors are at 7pm. Cheap date?
