YARDLIFE FESTIVAL

One thing East London could never be accused of having too few of is music festivals, but its really good to see a genuinely grass roots project come to fruition. Yardlife is one such festival, set up as the dissertation project of a third year uni student it will take place in Hackney Downs Studios for one day only on 28th April this year.

It's also the chance to do something good for charity too, so, you can ease you conscience as well as enjoying a day of partying and live music! The whole event is in aid of Multiple Sclerosis Research with all the artists appearing for free and all profits going directly to the charity. Tickets are not for sale, strictly speaking, the event is invite only and he only way to get an invite is to make a donation. Good for your social life, good for charity. Winning combination!

The line up looks pretty immense too - headlined by Peter Doherty, the bill also features Filthy Dukes, Hatcham Social and many many more to keep you dancing all day. The location will be the Hackney Downs Studios, an old print works with huge cavernous spaces hosting the acts, plus the open air yard area. VIPs will also be admitted to the roof terrace.

Other than the music, the main focus of the day will be fashion and style with an affordable vintage fair, hair and make up artists to help you get the 50s style and a pop-up event called Stitched Up teaching you how to customise and modify old clothes to turn them into something new!

Invites will be strictly limited so we'd suggest you register pretty sharpish! To be guarented entry applicants must then go to justgiving.com/yardlifefestival to make a donation - suggested £10. Music, fashion, fun with your friends, no massive ticket prices and all for charity. Not bad for a dissertation project, not bad at all.

WEST END FILM CLUB...

One of the main reasons that we love London is that anything is possible. If you wanted to watch a film anywhere else you could go to the cinema or buy a DVD to watch at home. In London though you could always go to the pub to watch a film.....

Not just any pub though. The West End Film Club is taking over The Comedy Pub on Oxendon Street for one day only Tuesday 28th February and is showing the 80's classic Ferris Bueller's Day Off. The John Hughes film, starring Matthew Broderick is a classic of the comedy genre, so the Comedy Pub, just doors away from The Comedy Store, seems like the most appropriate place for it to be shown!

It's a late showing, so you won't need to take a 'Day Off', but you might be a bit bleary eyed on Wednesday - doors are at 10pm with the film starting at 11pm. There will be music and cheap drinks with the bar open until 1am. Tickets are priced at £5 each.

Last year's season of pop-up films consisted of outstanding choices like Labyrinth, The Breakfast Club, Top Gun, Stand By Me and Halloween so we will be hoping to see plenty more coming soon! Watch this space....

RUBY'S...

The East End is on fire these days with new restaurants and bars popping up all over town. The newest drinking den to grace the streets of Dalston is Ruby's located in the basement of 76 Stoke Newington Road. We first spotted the bar when we attended The Superette pop-up there and were impressed by it's Victorian style speak-easy interiors apposed to the usual industrial/half finished basement bars along this road.

On Thursday we went back for the opening night and are happy to report that the drinks are just as good as the decor  - Ruby's is all fur coat and knickers! The drinks menu features 5 very different cocktails, a selection of wines, three beers and spirits. We'd recommend the fruity Blackberry Mojito served in an original 1940's Manchester milk bottle - a combination of rum, chambord, blackberries, mint lime and soda. Or the Passionfruit Bison Vodka Julep with bison grass vodka, creme de peche, passionfruit, apple juice and mint served in a tin cup a'la war style!

Cocktails come in at £8, wine from £5 and beers £4. We have to say we're pretty darn pleased that Dalston has gone and got itself a great cocktail joint, and it's only 5 minutes from our HQ. Just look for the cinema sign which says "nothing to see here" there clearly is!

Wed to Thurs 6-11pm, Fri & Sat 6pm - midnight.

AROUND THE WORLD PARTY...

Most clubs are essentially the same combination of overpriced drinks, aggressive doormen and insufferable DJs playing crap music you’d never dream of listening to anywhere else. That’s why when something genuinely new and interesting comes along we sit up and take notice, but not even we could have come up with the twisted genius that is the Around The World party.

For aeons, students have had the ‘around the world’ drinking rule where every drink in an evening must come from a different country but this party takes things to another level. For one night only on 16th March at the Arcadia club on the South Bank, Bearded Kitten becomes Bearded Airlines as the nightlife maniacs have transformed a regular venue into an airport – including an imitation aeroplane doubling as a live performance space. Over the course of the evening, the music and entertainment changes to different international themes. Guests will visit six countries with associated acts performing in each – drummers and dancers from the musical Fela will be representing Africa, the London School of Samba will welcome you to South America and the Trans-Siberian Marching band will greet your arrival in the Balkans.

Other destinations include Japan, the USA, France and the UK naturally, with in flight entertainment from Krafty Kuts, Goldie Rocks and Tim Fanucci and a live performance from Dollar Bill. Other entertainments include cabin crew and pilot who will be mingling with guests, the airport buggy will be giving rides, cocktails in the departure lounge and most excitingly, duty free. This is one airport we wouldn’t mind being stuck at for hours!

Boarding passes (that’s tickets to you and me) are £12 for early birds or £15 from wegottickets.com Book early though because this one is sure to sell out!.

Now fasten your seatbelts and get ready for take off!

DUREX PARTY X THE BOX...

If you fancy gaining access to one of the most talked about and exclusive clubs in London then now is your chance. Durex have teamed up with The Box to celebrate the launch of their Mutual Climax condoms (saucy!!) which apparently "slow him down and speed her up” - not that we'd know! On Tuesday 29th February there will be a VIP launch party headlined by DJs Annie Mac and Scott Mills.

The whole evening is paid for and includes free cocktails and nibbles plus a few celebs and goody bags so that you can all try out the condoms at home. To nab yourself tickets head over to the facebook page and play the game - be quick as the comp closes on Friday!

Bag it up people!

MAY FAIR BAR X SUNDAY GIRL

On Sunday night we went along to the launch of Sunday Girl's (aka Jade Williams) residency at the May Fair bar. The May Fair bar located in the 5-star May Fair hotel, is famous for its celeb clientele, it was of course where Miss Moss hosted one of her birthday parties which apparently lasted for days.

We visited during London Fashion Week and the bar was full of model like ladies, trendy young things and even a few oldies! The music was a mixture of old school tracks, R&B and chart toppers but the highlight for us were the cocktails. We drank the uber sweet Raspberry Ripple, a champagne cocktail of Raspberries, lemon and Campari topped with Duval Leroy Brut. Temptation a Polish vodka flavoured with bison grass, Chambord raspberry liqueur, lemon juice and guava juice topped with Duval Leroy Brut and a Passionfruit Martini, which needs no explanation.

If you fancy hanging with the cool kids whilst sipping on some fruity cocktails (all came served with a piece of fruit which means less guilt right?) and maybe even having a dance you can catch Sunday Girl at the May Fair every Sunday night until 11th March. Sunday Girl starts at 6.30pm till 9.30pm. Entrance is free.

ROUX AT THE PEMBURY

Roux at the Pembury situated above Roux at Parliament Square is the newish bar offering from Michelin-starred chef Michel Roux Jr - most of you will know him from Masterchef. We recently attended a Zacapa rum night there which was themed around matching cocktails with food rather than wine.

The bar/lounge specialises in Rum cocktails and if you fancy something a little different ask for mixologists Abdulai Kpekawa’s secret cocktails, such as the ‘Zacapa Cerveza’ with lime, beer, honey syrup and a malt and nutmeg foam, or the ‘Mayan Martini’, which stars Zacapa, gewürztraminer wine and orange bitters.

Our favourite was definitely the Zacapa Cerveza - it tasted like a trifle which can only be a good thing! The bar is more formal than the places we'd usually hang out in, well it is located in Westminster but a good choice for some sophisticated cocktails with great aunt Willamina.

THE GUARDIAN OPEN WEEKEND

Have you ever wondered what goes on inside the headquarters of a major British daily newspaper? Ever wanted to get the true inside scoop on the stories of the day? Ever wondered wanted to ask the journalists and columnists questions about everything they know? The Guardian’s Open weekend can help with all these things and much more! This is the first time The Guardian has opened its doors to the public in this way and provides a unique opportunity to see how the industry works.

Over the weekend of 24th - 25th March they are hosting over 200 sessions with over 300 speakers from all over the world discussing issues that affect us all. Star speakers include editor Alan Rusbridger and Charlie Brooker, host of Screenwipe and the 10 O’Clock show and regular Guardian columnist. Events will cover everything from politics and economics; with sessions on the economic climate and the Eurozone with talks from the Guardian’s Deborah Orr, Zac Goldsmith MP and Ed Balls MP; to Culture and Music which features talks on creating successful fashion labels, how to publish your own book and creating your own jewellery plus talks from film director Steve McQueen, Marcus Mumford of Mumford & Sons and author Ian MacEwan.

There will be representatives from The Guardian’s sport desk in attendance too, including the mysterious Secret Footballer, a current pro who has a regular column in the paper; plus demonstrations from Guardian food writers Felicity Cloake and Allegra McEvedy who will be giving tips on how to cook the perfect breakfast and lunch.

Phone hacking and journalistic ethics is sure to take a high profile over the weekend and a particular highlight will be the debate on the subject at 4.15 on Saturday afternoon featuring speakers Jon Snow, Tom Watson MP, The Guardian’s Marina Hyde, The Mirror’s David Banks and investigative journalist Nick Davies. Expect this one to be a bloody and brutal discussion. Undoubtedly though, the highlight will be Charlie Brooker Live which takes place at 10am on Saturday 24th at King’s Place hall one. His acid tongue will turn to all manner of subjects, including questions from the audience so this is not one to be missed.

Tickets are priced at £40 for Saturday and £30 for Sunday, or £60 for a weekend pass. Children under 16 go free.

THE CIRCLE LINE PUB CRAWL

Last year LondOntheInside played the Monopoly Board pub crawl, visiting 26 pubs taking in everywhere from Old Kent Road to Mayfair including the stations and won! This year we had to go one better though, and so we attempted the 27 pubs of the Circle Line pub crawl.

The rules were simple - an alcoholic drink in the nearest open pub to each of the 27 stops on the iconic yellow line, obviously excluding the newly opened part of the line that extends to Hammersmith - we're alcoholics, not idiots. Walking between stops was allowed and there was no pre-requisite to catch a tube between every stop.

The only sensible way to kick this off was with a fry up, so six men met at Victoria station Wetherspoons at 10.30am to line our stomachs, ready for an 11 o'clock booze kick off - If you're gonna fill yourself with alcohol there's no point in having a posh brekkie is there? It was decided that half pints of lager would be the only way we'd make it out alive, except for one hardy soul who decided that 27 shots of rum was clearly a better idea. The fool.

Finding places that were open at this time of day was a challenge, so it took a small wander around Sloane Square to find the Duke of Wellington and after a swift half, we were off to the Zetland Arms at South Kensington. It was here we first encountered Kiwis on their annual Waitangi Day pub crawl, a massive annual tradition of binging that we were more than tempted to join.

After heading to Gloucester Road and the Stanhope Arms we were off to High St Kensington and to The Greyhound. Around here we realised the scale of Waitangi Day with police trying their hardest to keep thousands of drinkers on the pavement and off the road. The Greyhound just about had room for us though,  we even had time to catch a bit of the football and lose some money in the quiz machine.

Heading north, we lost the Kiwis at Notting Hill Gate and after a drink at the Old Swan it was on to Bayswater and the Black Lion and then the Pride of Paddington just outside Paddington station. By the time we reached The Chapel at Edgware Road there was eight of us, but under strict rules only those at the start could claim to finish it! To celebrate getting this far, a Jägerbomb was in order at the Metropolitan Bar at Baker Street.

A short walk down the Euston Road with a Big Mac in hand got us to The Green Man at Great Portland Street and, refreshed by a spot of lunch we were soon off to Euston Square and the Bree Louise, a cracking pub if you like real ale. A few metres down the road was The Betjeman Arms in recently opened St Pancras Station.

By mid afternoon we'd made it to the Three Compasses at Farringdon and we had reached the half way point. We picked up the pace a bit and we were soon off to The Shakespeare at Barbican and The King's Arms at Moorgate. Another Jägerbomb at the Hamilton Hall at Liverpool Street and things were starting to seem distinctly blurry..... We head to the Aldgate Exchange where a barmaid remembers us from the previous year's Monopoly Crawl and before too long we're in The Liberty Bounds at Tower Hill.

Cocktail bars weren't really on our radar, but due to the lack of pubs open in the City at the weekend we somehow ended up in B@1 at Monument. We strike up a conversation with the staff who look after us with specially made cocktails. Happy days! It may have been the cocktails or maybe just the cumulative effects of 20 drinks in 10 hours, but the rest of the evening is a blur. However photographic evidence and some crumpled receipts definitely prove we moved onto All Bar One a Cannon Street, O'Neills at Mansion House and The Black Friar at Backfriars.

By the time we reached Temple, we'd caught up with the Kiwis again, so there's no way we're getting into Walkabout, instead we head to the The Wellington. On the home straight, we head to The Sherlock Holmes near Embankment and Lord Moon of the Mall near Westminster. Our final pub of the evening was the Strutton Groud at St James's Park and I'm not ashamed to say I do not remember being here at all. We had done it though, a marathon effort encompassing all 27 pubs in thirteen and a half hours. The big question now is how are we going to beat it next year?!!

CINEMA AT THE YARD...

As outdoor cinemas don’t really work this time of the year, for obvious reasons, those clever little people at Rooftop Film Club have come up with a solution. With a range of films from new and old, to all time classics tickets will be so hot they may just melt the snow. It’s 9 of your English for a ticket and we’d recommend booking in advance, with a line-up which includes Dirty Dancing, Lost Boys, Labyrinth and Reservoir Dogs you’d be CRAZY not too!

THE OTHER CINEMA...

Fed up with the blockbusters at the local multiplex? Do you long for something a little more personal, a more romantic version of the cinema experience? A return to the golden days of classic movies and traditional service sounds like the perfect antidote to the faceless popcorn rip-off merchants masquerading as cinemas, which is why we're very excited about The Other Cinema.

For a short period between 14th-18th February, they will be taking over the Troxy on Commercial Road transforming it into an old-school Picture Palace with an organist, usherettes and live music bringing back the glory days. The film shown will be David Lean's classic Brief Encounter, one of the most beautiful and romantic films of all time to tie in perfectly with valentine's day.

The Other Cinema will screen one classic movie every month with a network of screening partners all over the UK. Tickets are priced at £20 (£15 for concessions) and available here.

THE VAULT FESTIVAL

This February, in secret tunnels beneath Waterloo, the Vault Festival is presenting the broadest imaginable programme of entertainment, from opera to cinema, live music and even a puppet theatre. With hundreds of performers and ten thousand tickets available, this is set to be a huge event!
