ARCHER STREET

Londontheinside has a duty to report to you about new nightspots around the city, so we recently paid a visit to the new Archer Street bar in Soho, a bar that shares it's name with it's location. Every new bar seems/needs to have a gimmick to differentiate itself from others and word had reached us about the singing bar staff here...

The atmosphere is typically West End, glitzy and glamorous. The ground floor is light and spacious whilst the basement bar is more confined and atmospheric, particularly as the night wore on. This is the sort of bar that will be popular with London office workers for an after work cocktail or two.

The music policy is eclectic but inclusive, mainly sticking to socially acceptable pop like CeeLo Green and Beyonce alongside classic indie and rock like Blondie, White Stripes and Queen.

The real highlight though are the performances by the staff - an instrumental track is played by the DJ and two members of staff with radio mics start to belt out the lyrics. This is fairly amusing when they are around the room, but slightly irritating when they're behind the bar. Whilst preparing a cocktail for us, the barmaid burst into a rendition of 'Don't Stop Me Now' so energetic that she dropped the cocktail shaker full if alcohol into the ice bin and had to start again. Not the best idea when there's a large queue at the bar, we were even tempted to stick our head in the ice and lap it up but thought this may alarm other punters.

The cocktail menu features some innovative twists on old favourites although the prices are not cheap, but hey the entertainments free!

UNDERGROUND FILM CLUB...

The new Underground Film club from the peeps behind The Rooftop Film Club, is the newest of a long line of cinematic subterranean film screening experiences in London. This one however has the amazing surrounding of the Dorfman Hub in Camden’s Roundhouse which sits beneath the main space. With screenings of classic, cult and recent film releases this is another chance to see brilliant cinema in a unique setting. The only problem with these places is that they tend to show the same films, then again these are the movies you want to watch again and aagain! The Underground Film Club is showing the usual winners along with a few of our favourites; Pulp Fiction, Goodfella’s, Shawshank Redemption and The Goonies.

Check out the roundhouse for more deets.

PATRON XO CAFE NOIR

Christmas is not all about paper hats from crackers or deeply unfashionable jumpers and it's definitely not about a dubious snog under the mistletoe at the office Christmas party (although we do love a good snog!). As we all know, the true meaning of Christmas is the party season and the events that pop up all over London.

One of the first of this year's festive season is the Patron XO and Jonny Woo pop up event at Kingly Court in Soho. Cafe Noir is bought to you by the coffee tequila brand and the alternative drag impresario who have teamed up to create an event that couldn't be more Soho if it tried. Be quick though because it's only around for three days.

Each day is split into three parts; from 3pm customers are invited to take part in a three one-hour cocktail making master classes, followed by Jonny's Christmas quiz at 6.30. Finally, at 9pm, the venue becomes a decadent speakeasy, with cabaret acts and all manner of debauchery promised.

Booking is recommended as we expect it to be packed every night! If you think you can handle luxurious cocktails and raunchy entertainment then head on down.

BUM BUM TRAIN...

Since our real life Zombie experience we've become slightly obsessed with these "real life" games. The latest one to grab our attention is the Bum Bum Train - an interactive theatre show where you are the star.

From the moment your journey begins you are pushed around in a wheelchair to 15 - 20 different experiences, from winning a game show to coaching a football team. The Bum Bum Train comes to London every year and ALWAYS sells out  - a testiment to just how weird and wonderful the experience is. But don't take our word for it - check out the passenger testimonials online.

Tickets go on sale Monday 7th November for Dec/Jan shows. Get ready for the ride of your life!

BANGING WEEKEND.....

Remember, Remember the 5th of November - Yip that's right folks this Saturday is Bonfire night! So how do you celebrate? We hear you cry! Fear not because we've done the hard work so you don't have to...recommendations below:

If you're after the full shebang - Catherine wheels, rockets, the lot then check out one of the firework displays taking place across the city. The biggest one is at Blackheath but be warned it can get a little crowded. Over in East London our favourite Victoria Park fireworks are no more, they have now being split into three small displays at Weavers Fields in Bethnal Green, Millwall Park in Mudchute, and Bartlett Park in Limehouse. Other displays include Brockwell Park, Battersea (£10), Southwark and Crystal Palace (£5).

Personally we're heading to Netil360 for hot cocktails and views over the city. But if you fancy doing something a little different, which doesn't involve freezing yourself to death then we'd suggest you headed along to The Royal Horseguards Hotel for the special Guy Fawkes Afternoon Tea with gunpowder macaroons and TNT truffles.

If monies well and truly tight you could head along to Arthaus in Hackney for the Bonfire Lounge - a night of music, visual art, poetry and performance focused around the cult of Bonfire Night. It's free and warm - what more do you need?

Whatever you do, you should all do one thing = ENJOY IT.

UPDATE: SECRET CINEMA

News just in - Secret Cinema, possibly London's best cinema experience has announced further dates in January 2012 following the sell out of December dates last week.

As always the cinema will be held in the heart of the city at a location known only to those who secure tickets.

Tickets for January go on sale tomorrow - Friday 4th November at 1pm sharp.

Good luck people!

GOSLING MARATHON...

There is no denying it Ryan Gosling is the hottest actor in the film world right now and we concur - having seen him in Blue Valentine, Drive and Crazy, Sexy, Love we're hooked - all of us, ladies and men. Yip he does something to us and you should let him do that something to you too.

Head along to the Riverside Studios on Monday for a Ryan Gosling movie marathon - the cinema will be screening Blue Valentine followed by Drive. For only £8.50 for two films it's a bargain - we dare anyone to tell us they don't like Gosling after those two movies!

NETIL360...

Netil House is a mixture of studio spaces for creative types, artists and musicians. It is also home to a brand new, pretty awesome rooftop space with bar, quirky seating areas and views over London. We managed to bag ourselves into the Tweat Up event last Wednesday which also doubled as the opening party with hot spiced rum, mulled wine and freaking ace views over London.

This place is sure to see a beacon of activity in the summer, but as a Winter destination it’s still pretty hot - they have heated lamps - and this weekend it’s the perfect place to watch the fireworks with its panoramic views over the London skyline. Join them on Friday for an after-work party with hot cocktails and live music, followed by a family fun day on Sat and firework watching then on Sunday there is more live music and cocktails. GET INVOLVED!

FREE ENTRY. Limited tickets available on the door for evening events. Advanced booking advised.
Send your name and contact details to netil360@creativenetworkpartners.com to reserve your place.

20 YEARS OF DAZED & CONFUSED MAGAZINE...

Dazed and Confused has been a go-to reference for style and culture since its explosive launch in London in 1991 by Jefferson Hack and renowned photographer Rankin. Quickly developing into a notoriously creative platform for new artists, musicians, designers, and filmmakers, and being widely known for its irreverent attitude, Dazed & Confused represented a new wave in the British press, bringing together figures from an assortment of fields and eras to produce extraordinary interviews and original artwork exclusively for the magazine.

To celebrate 20 years in the business Jefferson Hack and Emma Reeves, in collaboration with Somerset House have curated a special exhibition named Making It Up As We Go Along’. The exhibition immortalises the magazine’s most infamous visual stories, featuring legendary photoshoots, iconic covers, controversial editorial content and artwork from influential photographers, designers, and artists.

Work featured includes ground-breaking photography by Rankin, Nick Knight, David Sims and Terry Richardson, specially commissioned projects by artists Jake & Dinos Chapman, Damien Hirst and Sam Taylor-Wood, cutting edge fashion pages by stylists Katie Grand, Katy England, Alister Mackie and Nicola Formichetti, and specially selected designs by fashion giants Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood and Gareth Pugh. 2.8 HOURS LATER...LONDON

We’ve always wondered what we would do in a Zombie apocalypse, and we'll be honest we never thought we’d truly find out……how wrong we were. Saturday night (Oct 29th) saw LondOnTheInside take part in the Zombie chase game 2.8 hours later, a game designed quite specifically to scare the living bejesus out of you!

2.8 Hours Later from SlingShot on Vimeo.

We had seen the promotional video and read the rules but were still not quite prepared for what followed. Starting in Bermondsey Square we were treated to cult classic Beetle Juice on an open air big screen whilst queuing for briefing. Rules reiterated and map in hand we were set off in groups of 8 every 90 seconds through the streets of London to find our first co-ordinate point and location of a ‘survivor’ – each player is given a silver glow in the dark armband to distinguish you from the general public.

Stumbling up-on an actor pretending to be a survivor from the zombie apocalypse we quickly realized how ‘real’ this game was. In floods of tears and quite literally petrified a girl warned us of the dangers and told us what had happened to her friends and family – so convincingly so that while she told us her story an elderly couple who happened to be passing by stopped to see if she was OK to which we had to explain that it was all a game. She gave us our next co-ordinate and we set off into the night...

We all knew what was coming and what we had signed up for, but there is nothing like being chased by something that is trying to kill and devour you to make you wish you’d spent those extra few hours in the gym. Whilst not really paying attention and map reading a zombie burst out from a side street and quite literally sprinted after us. Running down the middle of the road trying to avoid buses etc we did our best to escape the undead creature as more appeared from within parks, behind cars and from alleyways our pack scatters and screams as we do our best not to be caught. Step back for a moment and look at this from the general public point of view; they have no idea a game is being played, people are screaming and running for their lives down real streets THIS IS NOT A SET. We pass busy pubs and restaurants chased by something growling with blood pouring from its mouth. People we pass on the street are frightened and start running with us in fear of being caught, this is incredibly real.

We eventually escape the first onslaught and regroup to get our breath back, hunched over, panting we realize that we have another 2.8 hours of this to get through if we are to survive. As we cross London we are scarred of EVERYTHING, it’s Halloween weekend and people are in the streets dressed up, we have no idea if they are merely party goers or part of the game, we run from everyone just to make sure.

Through a series of survivors and map co-ordinates we travel across the capital, getting directed to derelict buildings, closed down pubs and scariest of all an empty multi-story car park, now that might not sound scary but throw 8-10 zombies in there on floors above and below you and in the stairwells in the dark it’s petrifying! As we reach the top level which is open air we can see Zombies on the streets below us, we are trapped, one of our team is in tears and our hearts are pounding! Finding another survivor we (just) escape to safety.

Eventually after nearly three hours of being on the run we make it to resistance HQ, a warehouse in Elephant and Castle where we are taken by men in has-mat suits and gas masks to the scanning room where we are scanned for bites. Obviously nobody really got ‘bitten’ those that are caught are marked with UV paint which then shows up in a scanning room lit with blacklights. Only 3 of our team of 8 have survived to the end and those three (one of which being myself) are taken away from our infected friends to the congratulatory room where we have celebratory photos with the remaining human race.

With the game over we are led into a zombie disco where we are re-united with our friends who have now been covered in full make up to make them look like one of the creatures. Spooky songs and scary themed cocktails are a plenty as we do the thriller dance until the early hours.

We can’t recommend this game enough, but only if your are physically fit, if running isn’t your thing you need not apply – wear sensible shoes, don’t get drunk before hand and if you scare easily then maybe stay at home. At £28 (naturally) we think this is a bargain for an evening’s entertainment 2.8 hours of games and then the option to party to your hearts content. But only if you survive, of course.
